This week at Hope 2/1/2021

Yesterday in worship we observed the Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany as we focused on how “love builds people up.” According to 1 Corinthians 8, knowledge is a good thing, but it can entice us into arrogance. Better is to rely on God’s knowledge, which secures our place in His eternal wisdom. One thing we do know is that Christ’s love has set us free from condemnation, free from bondage, free from guilt and shame. However, we never want to use this freedom for self-serving purposes. Instead, our freedom is directed toward the help and well-being of our brothers and sisters in Christ. Each of us looking out for the best interests of others results in a healthy Church living in the love of God.

Consider this your special invitation to attend one of our Sunday morning Discipleship Classes. I am leading one on the Biblical distinctives of Lutheran Spirituality, starting this Sunday with an in-depth look at Prayer. Terry Wende is leading A Conversation on Racism, meeting in Friendship Hall. Not only will you grow in faith, you will also contribute to the growth of your fellow members!

The big deal next Sunday will be the celebration of Dorcas Circle’s 60th anniversary. Ladies of Hope have been meeting regularly since 1961 with dedication to fostering Christian fellowship and devotion to service in the church. To that end, Dorcas will be providing special breakfast brunch food during our 10:00 fellowship time. Let us rejoice and give thanks together to the Lord for His blessings through the years.

Looking ahead—Ash Wednesday is February 17. We will have worship service with Holy Communion at both 11:30 am and 6:30 pm. The further midweek schedule is still being determined.

On the horizon—along with our Sunday School offerings, we are looking for more ways to partner with Austin Disaster Relief Network. The church council will be meeting with an ADRN representative next week to find out about the possibilities.

Scripture readings for Sunday—Isaiah 40:21-31; 1 Corinthians 9:16-27; Mark 1:29-39.
